Facts about Lizard Lake:

Location: Northwest Iowa, Pocahontas county.

Size: 285 acres

Fish: common carp, Bigmouth Buffalo, Black Bullhead, Channel Catfish, Yellow Perch.

At one time Northern Pike were plentiful in the lake as well. In fact, as late as 1995 a 32" Northern was caught in the lake.

Bluegills were also very plentiful as well as freshwater eels too.

Wildlife: Whitetail Deer, Coyote, Red Fox, Raccoon, Mink, Muskrat, Beaver and Migratory Waterfowl.

History: Named "Lake of the Lizard" by the Sioux Indians. Hence forth, it became known as "Lizard Lake".

The lake was a popular hunting ground for the Sioux, Pottawattamie, and Sac & Fox tribes. In the 1800's the land around the lake was pioneered by white settlers. One of which was my great grandfather.

In the 1930's a resort was operated on the east side of the lake. A restaurant, billiard hall, roller skating rink, softball diamond and dance pavillion. The Lawrence Welk Orchestra, Guy Lombardo, Glen Miller and The Dorsey Brothers once played at the dance pavillion.

The lake also had its own softball team, the Lizard Lake Wildcats.

In the 1950's there were speed boat races on the lake.

During this time the lake was also a popular fishing spot.

Lizard Lake News:

The Lizard Lake restoration effort has lost one of its leading advocates for the lake.
My cousin and very good friend,
Lenny Schachtner of Belvidere, Illinois passed away Nov. 19, 2007 after a battle with cancer.
Lenny had been involved in restoring Lizard Lake since 1990. He was a member of the Lizard Lake restoration committee and contributed a huge amount of time and effort to see the lake dredged and restored. He continued to talk about the lake until the very end. He never gave up on his dream of seeing the lake dredged and restored to its once pristine beauty.
He will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Any meetings on lake restoration efforts or events will be posted here:
